Three police officers were killed and at least 15 additional individuals sustained injuries in an apparently premeditated detonation from gas at a farmhouse in northern Italy.

How It Happened

The detonation occurred as law enforcement and fire personnel went into the residence near Verona to execute an eviction order for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

All three officers killed served in the Carabinieri force.

Arrests and Aftermath

One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and one more individual who fled subsequent to the blast was located soon after. The trio have been taken to hospital.

The blast could be noticed approximately 5 kilometers away and footage from the area displayed the building turned into a mass of wreckage.

“We are in a period of mourning,” said the Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who noted that efforts had been made to evict the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, said the residence was subject to an eviction order due to unpaid amounts accumulated by the siblings.

Negotiators had been sent to talk with the family members who had locked themselves into the property. When the officers came just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents caused the detonation.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” regional commander Commander Papagno informed reporters.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion directly hit our officers,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the residence, the minister said.

Casualties and Damage

The wounded by the incident comprised an additional 11 personnel of the Carabinieri as well as a trio of personnel of national police and a emergency responder.

According to the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a derelict state and had was without power.

The official thought the blast had occurred on a story above the doorway and told journalists it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Moments before the incident, he said members had “heard a whistle, likely the gas canisters being turned on”.

Community Reaction

“We all knew the situation was dire,” nearby inhabitants stated to Italian media, mentioning that the family members had in the past stated to “blow themselves up” rather than be evicted.

“The blast resulted in a ‘horrific, deeply distressing and tragic cost’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other elected representatives in commemorating the three officers who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
