Ex-Treasury chief Larry Summers is leaving the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal the accused trafficker became publicly available.

Summers stated in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the enterprise, and anticipate tracking their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly headed Harvard University, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Epstein.

The newly public communications showed that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before his 2019 detention for accused sex trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the AI firm stated it understood the economist's decision to step down.

This news follows after the entire Congress of the legislative branch agreed on Tuesday to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on the case.

The legislation will subsequently move to the desk of the White House for approval. The President has indicated he intends to endorse the measure, after reversing his view on the subject following pressure from his followers.

A batch of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the Congressional committee days ago referenced numerous well-known personalities in the financier's previous network, without implying any legal wrongdoing by those figures.

The emails showed that the professor and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often seeking to introduce Summers to prominent world leaders.

After the emails were made available with the public, he stated he accepted "total ownership for my misguided choice to maintain interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the individuals closest to me".
